Support Legislation requiring Voter-Verified Paper Trail for 2004 Elections
"We cannot afford nor
can we permit another major assault on the integrity of the American
electoral process" said Rep. Rush Holt. Last October, Congress passed the HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT (HAVA), ground-breaking election reform legislation that is currently helping states replace antiquated and unreliable voting systems. HAVA, however is fueling a rush by states and localities to purchase computer-voting systems that suffer from a serious flaw; Voters and election officials have no way of knowing whether the computers are counting votes properly. Hundreds of nationally renowned computer scientists consider a voter-verified paper trail to be a critical safeguard for the accuracy, integrity and security of computer-assisted elections. THE VOTER CONFIDENCE AND INCREASED ACCESSIBILITY ACT OF 2003 would require all voting machines to produce an actual paper record by 2004 that voters can view to check the accuracy of their votes and that election officials can use to verify votes in the event of a computer malfunction, hacking or other irregularity and requires mandatory surprise recounts in a portion of both domestic and overseas jurisdictions. "A recount requires that there be a reliable record to check," said Holt. "We can and should do this in time for the 2004 federal election." Pease show your support of
this legislation by signing this petition, Sharing it with your friends,
and urging your representatives to support bill H.R. 2239.

Defeat the Judicial Nomination of Janice Rogers Brown
Contributed by Working Assets The Bush administration continues its aggressive efforts to dramatically alter the makeup of the Federal appeals courts by attempting to push through ideologically-driven extremist right-wing candidates who will tilt critical appeals courts for decades to come. If approved, these nominees receive lifetime appointments and are often considered for the Supreme Court. California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is an extremist conservative judicial activist who, via her decisions and speeches, demonstrates an open hostility to affirmative action, civil rights, reproductive rights, workers' rights, the rights of people with disabilities and consumers' rights. She has frequently been the lone dissenter on decisions made by the California Supreme Court, and there are compelling complaints that she ignores judicial precedent, including decisions made by the U.S. Supreme Court. She has been described as to the right of the most extreme right-wing Supreme Court justices, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. In addition, she was twice rated "not qualified" for the state supreme court and her American Bar Association rating for the DC Circuit is tied for the lowest ABA rating among Bush court of appeals nominees. Because of her equal opportunity hostility to a basic belief in equal justice for all, her nomination is opposed by a wide range of advocacy, labor, women's rights, civil rights and environmental organizations, including the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, People for the American Way, Alliance for Justice, the AFL-CIO, Natural Resources Defense Council, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, National Senior Citizens Law Center, National Bar Association, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund and the Congressional Black Caucus, among others. Senator Dianne Feinstein holds a crucial seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and has not yet announced her opposition to this nominee from her home state. Call to action Urge Senator Dianne Feinstein to protect the values of civil rights,
freedom and reproductive choice by announcing her opposition and voting
to reject the nomination of Janice Rogers Brown.
| Stop Stonewalling 9/11 Commission Contributed By Working Assets The White House is refusing to fully cooperate with the bipartisan 9/11 Commission set up to investigate the events leading up to 9/11 and its immediate aftermath. In recent months, the Commission has become more aggressive in seeking documents withheld by various federal agencies, including the White House, as it works to meet a report deadline of May 2004. The White House aggressively fought the creation of the commission, and backed down only under severe pressure from the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11. The Administration particularly opposed granting the Commission the right to issue legal subpoenas, which could compel public agencies to comply with requests for information. The chair of the commission, Republican Thomas Kean, who was appointed by President Bush, is not backing down and has gone public for the first time in demanding all documents from the White House. He has the power to issue subpoenas for all documents and has indicated that "we're not going to be satisfied until we have everything we need to do our job". Failure to cooperate with the Commission will lead to a constitutional confrontation over executive privilege. There can be little doubt that the American people want the whole truth about the events leading up to 9/11 to be fully explored. Call to action Tell Chairman Kean you support his efforts to discover the whole truth
about 9/11.
